Disgusting Capitalism

Naomi Klein wrote about disaster capitalism – the rapid-fire corporate re-engineering of societies still reeling from shock — in her book Shock Doctrine. If that weren’t sufficiently disgusting in its own right, here’s a little tidbit from today’s headlines that should leave you pulling your hair out, “Preemie-preventive drug spikes from $10 to $1,500.”

In an effort to establish better quality control over custom compounds by specialty pharmacies, the government awarded an exclusive contract to KV Pharmaceutical. The rationale for the new pricing: Since the cost of care for a preemie is estimated at $51,000 in the first year alone, $1,500 a pop seems reasonable and a bargain.

Stop now before you fatten the bottom line of Bosley Hair Replacement, or whatever they call themselves.

This is the first I’ve heard of this drug and the astronomical price increase. Was this price increase caused by the public workers of Wisconsin? Maybe it was the Wisconsin nurses.

    Thanks for the heads up.

As people age they generally TEND to have a little money put away. If the insurance companies continue to raise their rates (to “get whole” before “ObamaCare” is fully implemented) and to deny coverage (even osteoarthritis sends them running for the exit), older folks will have to save their money and not buy things. Just like younger people who aren’t being paid squat cannot buy things. Ever hear the term “a living wage?” It means what one can LIVE on. Unemployed and underpaid persons don’t BUY things. Corporate types, teake note. Or are you simply going to rely on selling your crap to each other?
