Angie Layton

Angie Layton announces she will run for Colorado will run for Colorado State House District 12.  Angie currently serves on the League of Women Voters Legislative Action Committee and the Colorado Bar Association Legislative Action Committee.  She was appointed to the State Advisory Committee for the Gifted and Talented and is a member of the Boulder Valley School District Accountability Committee.  She also worked on the Colorado Bar Association Public Legal Education Committee which started “Our Courts”, an outreach program about the Colorado Judicial system that has been honored by the American Bar Association and endorsed by former US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.  She also currently serves on the Education and Children’s Committee for the Colorado Judicial Institute.   She was recently chosen to be a fellow at the Colorado Institute for Leadership Training.

Angie serves on the board of the Safe Shelter of Longmont and the Finance review committee for the Association for Community Living.  She is the past president of the Autism Society of Boulder County and was Director of Finance for the Boulder Valley League of Women Voters.  She is currently a member of the Education Committee for the Boulder League and was the Community Outreach Director and Publicity Chair for the American Cancer Society East Boulder County Relay for Life (comprising Lafayette Louisville and Erie) which raised more than $90,000 for cancer research this year.  Most of that money stays in Colorado to support patient care and research.

“My work in the community has allowed me to recognize that politics and government are not foremost on everyone’s mind, but the decisions that are made at the state house have a profound effect on the citizens who live in Colorado.  My goal will be to make sure that I am accessible to community leaders and residents and that their voices are heard at the state capitol”.

This will be especially important as the new maps for HD12 pairs Louisville with Firestone, Fredrick, Erie and Dacono.  “I feel that it will be especially important to listen to the constituents in both geographic areas as the concerns of the residents in Louisville may not be the same as those of the residents in Firestone.”

Angie has been married for 23 years to Jeff Anderson, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and has two daughters, the oldest of which was recently nominated as a National Merit Semi-finalist.  “Education is really the key to our democracy.  The Community Foundation (www.commfound.org/trendsmagazine)  recently released a report that showed individuals living in Boulder County with a college degree make significantly more than individuals who don’t graduate from high school or have just a high school diploma.  I think that our focus at the capitol should be on working with schools and communities to meet the needs of the children in this state.   We need to make sure that college remains affordable for low and middle income families and that no matter what zip code you live in, you can count on a quality education for your children”
