Main Street goes green

From the Longmont Ledger:

With much of the world focused on climate change, global warming and rising sea levels, Longmont’s Small Planet E Vehicles may be in the right business at the right time, offering alternative, cleaner and greener modes of transportation via electric cars, trucks, bikes, and scooters.

Like many people concerned about diminishing oil resources and an increasingly polluted planet, owner Tom Wilson works to find solutions to protect the changing environment.

“Fossil fuels are not only bad to use; we’re running out of them,” he says. “We’ve already used more than half of the oil that’s available and we’re on the down slope.”

Although the electric car was nearly crushed into oblivion, plug-in vehicles are making a new and sustainable comeback. Propelled by electric motors powered by rechargeable, recyclable, sealed lead acid or lithium ion batteries, the vehicles provide a cost-effective propulsion system with zero carbon-producing tailpipe emissions.

Campaign finance: The end of Democracy

From the Boulder Daily Camera:

Dan Frazier: Campaign finance: The end of Democracy

We can write the obituary for our American Democracy.  It died January 21st, 2010, with the Supreme Court ruling for Citizens United v. FEC.  From this day forward, there are no limits on the money that large or even multi-national corporations may use to control elections.  However much money a candidate can raise, corporations will be able to overwhelm that campaign with legal media buys.   In less than a decade, all elected officials will be vassals of corporations.  Instead of Democracy we will have Fascism: The marriage of government and business under authoritarian rule.

Of course we will not notice much of a change at first.  The elections will seem much the same.  A few of your favorite shows will go away but there will be plenty of interactive, sports, and reality shows.  There won’t be much media chatter about the bad economy except to blame it on some radicals.  Where you had a house, your kids will only be lucky to afford an apartment.  Many of your friends and relatives will fall on hard times but it will not be reflected in the news, which will talk instead about the patriotic necessity to sacrifice for the war.

There will really be only one party, with the two wings called the Democrats and Republicans.  Only corporate-vetted candidates will be on ballots and elections will be electronic and privatized.  Government positions will be patronage for loyal corporatists.  Corporations will be able to write or change any law to suit their purposes.  All facets of government will be repurposed for corporate use.  Public safety nets such as Social Security and Medicare will be quietly eliminated.   Constitutional rights will disappear because no one will defend them.

You think this is fiction?  It is already happening.  Who is going to stop it?

Foxymoron

From the Daily Camera Letters online:

Fair and balanced?

Yeah, right

My wife and I watched 60 Minutes with interest last Sunday to discover that Sarah Palin had to ask Joe Biden if she could call him Joe at the vice-presidential debates so she wouldn’t make the mistake of confusing his last name with Obama’s. She ended up calling him O’Biden anyway.

However strange that was, your story in Monday’s paper topped it. Fox News hired Sarah Palin as a political commentator and analyst. Her response? “It’s wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news.” Fox News fair and balanced? Now that’s an oxymoron.

And Sarah Palin as a Fox political analyst? That’s even better, my wife said. That`s a Foxymoron!

BRIGHTON — John Jukkola is happy Heaven Fest won’t be in his back yard this summer.

And he doesn’t want to see the Christian music festival return.

“I’m glad they’re gone, and I hope they don’t come back, but Longmont needs to know what they’re in for,” Jukkola said Tuesday afternoon in his shop on his 60-acre property on Weld County Road 4, about a mile north of the field where Heaven Fest was held the past two years.

Cognitive Dissonance Overload

One of the anonymously insane commenters at the TC blurted this out:

mfrede, sorry that you don’t get it. We have to rescue progress from the so-called progressives. We need a liberal, not a libertarian, social order with deeper values than material advances. Your idea all pre-existing traditions or values are by definition just so much unprogressive baggage is as philistine as it is laughable. Pseudo progressives pose danger of fanaticism, authoritarianism, abuse of power, exploitation or abuse of the old and the young, corruption, rigged elections and harm to minorities. In our confused discourse, some people who embody these very threats have disguised themselves as liberals. Their deep intolerance and intimidatory techniques in pursuit of license and power must be resisted in the interests of preserving a decent, fair and free society. That is why I am a progressive.

This is so twisted up logically it hurts to read.

The person behind this pseudonym should really seek psychiatric help immediately… obvious loss of connection to reality.

I mean, this person is so spooky they should be required to wear a yellow shirt with thick black diagonal stripes at all types to indicate ‘hazard’.

Anyone this mentally disrupted shouldn’t be allowed to drive.
