The following email was sent by Congresswoman Betsy Markey upon the completion of her term in the 111th Congress. We thank Betsy for her service in moving the nation forward to a positive and progressive future.
This week I completed my last day in Washington as a member of the 111 Congress. I am happy to be back in Colorado to spend the holidays with my family and our friends.
I could not have picked a better session in which to serve in Congress. And despite the heavy toll we took this election season, it was worth every effort.
I’m grateful that after 30 years of trying, our beloved Rocky Mountain National Park was granted wilderness protection in the early days of the session.
I’m proud that we passed real healthcare reform for the first time since President Teddy Roosevelt called for a national health-care system more than 100 years ago.
I’m thankful that the economy is showing signs of recovery and thankful we passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which among other things, made significant investments in energy efficiency and conservation and renewable energy technologies.
And in our final week, we voted to finally repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, reauthorized the America COMPETES Act, reaffirming our commitment to invest in innovation through research and development, passed the long-overdue FDA Food Safety Act, and approved legislation to help our heroic first-responders suffering from illnesses caused by the Sept 11 attacks.
Most importantly, I am grateful for the most wonderful, hard-working and committed staff, volunteers and supporters I could ever wish for. You will remain my lifelong friends; thank you for being part of this journey with me.
Have a blessed holiday season, and a very happy new year.
